Saws

Saws are tools or machine tools for cutting a wide variety of materials such as wood, metal or natural stone. Mostly, the saws perform rotary, linear, oscillating or pulling movements to separate the material or to cut a slit. A distinction is made between hand saws and motorised saws, and those powered by electricity, petrol or compressed air. Motorised saws are best suited to professionals on any construction site.

Different types of saw

There are various types of saw. Some examples are: Jigsaw and cordless jigsaw, circular saw and cordless circular saw, reciprocating saw and cordless reciprocating saw, masonry saw, cross-cut saw, mitre saw and cordless mitre saw, cordless cross-cut saw, metal-cutting compact circular saw or the metal-cutting band saw. Each of the saws has different modes of operation and characteristics.

The circular saw, the cordless circular saw and also the metal-cutting compact circular saw consist of a circular saw blade rotating on its own axis. The saw blade differs depending on the material being worked on. When machining metal, there is usually a greater number of teeth and a lower maximum speed than, for example, when cutting wood. The metal-cutting compact circular saw, circular saw and cordless circular saw are mainly used for renovation or interior work.

The masonry saw is another type of saw. It is a special version of the circular saw used for cutting and formatting natural stone. It features round saw blades that can be up to around 20 cm to 500 cm in diameter.

The jigsaw and the cordless jigsaw are common saws that feature a narrow, short, single-edged blade. The jigsaw belongs to the genre of hand saws and is considered an all-rounder among electric saws. The jigsaw and cordless jigsaw can be used with a wide variety of saw blades that are matched to different materials, precision, speed and curves, and they saw on tension.
A reciprocating saw or cordless reciprocating saw is a two-handed tool with a relatively long and movable saw blade clamped in the machine at only one end. That is why it is often called an electric foxtail. Different saw blades are also available for the reciprocating saw, and are tailored to the materials being worked on.

Another of the many types of saw is the cross-cut saw. It goes without saying that a cordless cross-cut saw is also available. A cross-cut saw falls under the category of circular saws, and comes in different designs. As standard, the cross-cut saw consists of a circular saw blade, motor, handle, cover, a sawing bench and the joint that enables the saws to cut at different angles.

The metal-cutting band saw has a circular, closed saw blade. Two wheels are driven by a powerful motor, thereby setting in motion the deflection rollers for the saw band. This moves the belt evenly through the unit in a vertical direction. The design means that the saw blade wears evenly.

The right saw for your job

Users intending to buy a saw should first be aware of the purpose for which the saws should be used. Since the different saws can be used for different types of cuts and materials, special attention should be paid to the following when buying a saw.

Circular saws

A circular saw or cordless circular saw is characterised by fast and precise straight cuts. In particular, it is perfect for long cuts in thick materials. A circular saw is mainly used for cutting wood, but can also cut other materials. For example, a circular saw or cordless circular saw can be used to cut chipboard, hardwood or wooden beams. The metal-cutting compact circular saw is a special circular saw for cutting metal.

Jigsaws

Curves and roundings in particular can be sawn precisely with a jigsaw. The jigsaw is the best solution for this type of cut, but straight cuts can also be made with a jigsaw or cordless jigsaw. A jigsaw is mainly used to cut wood, but other materials such as plastic, metal or ceramic tiles can also be cut with different saw blades. The jigsaw with pendulum stroke is a special type of these saws. It is significantly smoother and allows for more comfortable work.

Reciprocating saws

The reciprocating saw and the cordless reciprocating saw make the cut progressively downwards, which means that you can cut freely and vertically with a reciprocating saw. The reciprocating saw and cordless reciprocating saw are particularly suitable for rough cuts, pruning woody plants and demolition work. A reciprocating saw can be used to cut almost all materials if it has the right saw blade, which is why it is often called a universal reciprocating saw. However, the reciprocating saw is not so well suited for precise and straight cuts.

Cross-cut saws

Cross-cut saws and cordless cross-cut saws are mainly used in woodworking. They are used to cap workpieces in the vertical direction and they perform precise angular cuts perfectly. All types of wood can be cut and cut to length with a cross-cut saw, which is why it is often used to cut panelling for floors and walls. These saw are referred to as mitre saws or cordless mitre saws if the saw also moves in a horizontal direction. If the cross-cut saw has a tilting saw head and a rotating plate to make vertical angle cuts, it is called a mitre saw .

Metal-cutting band saws

The metal-cutting band saw is used for cutting many different types of metal such as iron, steel or copper. The right teeth allow the saw blade to effortlessly cut through the metals with a precise and straight cut, and curved cuts are also possible. For example, pipes can be straightened and U-profiles or hollow profiles can be cut.

Cordless or wired machine?

A distinction must also be made as to whether the user wants to work with a battery or with a cable. Saws with rechargeable batteries, such as the cordless jigsaw, the cordless reciprocating saw, the cordless compact circular saw and the cordless mitre saw, offer a particularly high degree of both flexibility and performance. This makes saws with rechargeable batteries perfect, for example, for mobile construction sites or for working outdoors and on roofs.
